Sekiro character blog update
Hello Hello everyone, Hi Hi here. So near the beginning of this year me and my friend MomoUra with the help of The Monster King were able to make a Vs blog on Scorpion Vs Wolf. I’m still very proud of that blog and the work we put in and I highly suggest it to those who haven't gone to check it out. Now fast forward to now and after playing through Sekiro again a few things got my thinking cap on again and made me realize I didn’t flesh out a few things on the blog. Mainly 3 main things that I wanted to explain more in detail.
Now while I was debating on making a blog on this or waiting till some event came by to share my thoughts, I ultimately decided to just make a little blog and share my thoughts on some things. Really the only reason I’m doing this is because Sekiro is in a three way tie of my favorite video game of all time and just thought it would be fun doing this. So what are those three things? Well let’s start with
WTF is Terror really?
The first thing I want to talk about (and the main reason why this blog is a thing) is the status effect Terror. Now at first I thought terror was just another form of fear manipulation, well I was sorta correct in my opinion back then but it’s a bit more weirder than that. So first let me show you the description Terror has.
“Taking damage from apparition-type enemies will fill the mind and body with terror. Guarding such attacks does not prevent terror from accumulating.”
“Those overcome with Terror are known to die.”
So it is indeed a form of Fear Manipulation, especially when the enemies who have these attacks are the Headless, second phase of the great ape fight where he’s a walking corpse, and numerous spirits. These are all things that would scare the crap out of people. Though with the description the game gives it kind of leads on there’s more then that no?
Really it's just a bigger term for saying it’s a heart attack. When it says it fills your mind and body, it’s basically just fear going through your whole body. There’s nothing really saying it’s say mind manipulation or anything else of the sort. So overall it’s just Wolf getting so scared that his body freezes and his mind is filled with fear to the point he dies. Well that’s first, now what’s next?
Does the Mortal Blade have dura neg?
This question came to me after some users say that the Mortal Blade has dura neg. To be more specifically the ability the weapon has, Mortal Draw is Dura Neg. This comes from its description which reads
So specifically it’s the “slashes through enemies” bit that makes it sound like it’s Dura Neg. So what’s my stance? Well not really?
To me this is just not really dura neg as it’s just another form of wording saying “yeah you cut them really good” and nothing makes it seem like it cuts the target in a specific way that makes it more durable foe wouldn’t just power through it. There isn’t much to say on this one, really it’s just weird to assume it’s Dura Neg and not just another way of saying that when you slash at someone a cool mist is left.
Wolf Soul resistance
Probably one of the biggest things for Wolf that I think is big is Wolf possible soul resistance. Now this is based on getting killed by one of the Headless. If you die to them there’s an animation where the Headless shoves his hand up Wolf butt and pulls out an orb. Now excusing the freaky side of things, why would this be a soul resistance? It’s just an orb? Well for that we will look at Japanese Folklore.
See back in the Edo period there were these monsters called Kappa. To keep a long story short on these guys their main thing was grabbing your butts, mainly to grab what was your life force which acts as your soul, and they were in a little orb shape...sound familiar???
So yeah the argument is that the Headless are pulling out Wolf soul and because Wolf can come back from that by resurrection he would have soul resistance. Now the counter argument I can see is that it’s never stated to be your soul the headless pulls. There’s no statement saying it is and maybe you wouldn’t even see it if you killed the Headless on the first try. However I think it’s fair to say it’s the soul, especially when Sekiro has many references to various Japanese Folklore.
The number of examples include the Shura or demon of hatred which is based off the Japanese Monster the Oni. These are monsters who are born from souls who are beyond being redeemed. This is exactly what the Demon of Hatred is like in Sekiro and is the exact path Wolf goes on in the Shura ending. He is a man who eventually becomes irredeemable as he goes on a killing spree with no reason behind it, and thus turns into a Demon of Hatred.
There’s also the major connection with both the Serpents and Centipedes we encounter in the game. With the Serpents they are very much resembling Uwabami which was a Yokai which is meant to represent life and the cycle of Youth. For the Centipedes the ones we encounter are ones that very much represent the Yokai Oomukade which is a giant centipede that would scare dragons.
The last big point is with the Divine Dragon. There is a major thing with this boss that hints at its Japanese Folklore origin. The theory that it’s actually the Everblossom tree, which to keep short is a tree that is always blooming or immortal to keep it in other words. This is because several things such as dragons are associated with the element of water, and in Sekiro we find the Divine Dragon boss area on top of the Fountainhead Head place which is where the rejuvenation water is coming from, which grants immortality. See where I’m coming from now?
Really we can be here all day with the many many references and folklore origins in almost everything in Sekiro. To put it simply Sekiro is a game with several folklore elements that it would be very possible that it is indeed Wolf soul being pulled out from his butt. If you want an in-depth look at everything in Sekiro then see the many posts by Sarumaro who goes into detail of everything in Sekiro. Yes it’s Reddit (oh no it’s the devil) but give it a shot, there are other subreddits that aren’t Death Battle that don’t have motives of lying about stuff, or at least in my opinion at least.
So yeah that’s about it. Just a really quick blog to give a bit more detail on one of my favorite games and characters. Oh and I guess this is further promotion that I’m doing Nariko Vs Aloy (Heavenly Sword Vs Horizon) blog so look forward to that…ok bye!!!
